Founder & Principal | R&A Architecture & Design, Inc.
Christian Robert, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, founded R&A Architecture + Design, Inc., in 2013 with Benjamin Anderson, Assoc. AIA, and was later joined in 2017 by Principal Shawn Gehle. R&A is a young, energetic architecture and design firm focused on creative solutions in multiple scales and typologies, including commercial, hospitality, residential, and mixed-use. With two offices—Culver City, CA, and Portland, OR—R&A transforms local communities through creative solutions. The firm embraces intensive research to deliver fresh, new thinking at every point of the design process. It values how curiosity feeds creativity, and how creative approaches yield innovative answers.
Although born, educated, and licensed in Germany, Christian has spent most of his architecture career working in Los Angeles. While at Gensler, he worked from programming through construction administration on the $650-million, 65-story Ritz-Carlton Hotel & Residences and JW Marriott Hotel at L.A. Live, a high-rise mixed-use project that won an Urban Land Institute 2010 Global Award for Excellence. Christian has previously served as Adjunct Professor at Santa Monica College and Pasadena City College. He received a Masters of Architecture degree from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 2001.
Since its inception, R&A has grown from a staff of five to a studio of more than 35. The firm is currently working on a number of boutique- and large-scale hospitality and multi-tenant projects in West Hollywood, Napa Valley, Central Oregon, Utah, and China, as well as creative office interiors in Los Angeles, New York City, Berlin, Sydney, and London. Recently, R&A won the 2017 Architizer A+ award for its design of The Camps at Coos Bay Lagoon in coastal Coos Bay, OR.
