In the Margins

In the Margins is ILC's annual publication that is meant to activate a unique dialogue within our community at large. We want to prioritize the innovative side of this community and supplement a platform for people to portray their unadulterated thoughts.

Submit your work:

We are in search of creative submissions! Any of the following are welcome: original poems, short essays, traditional art mediums, digital artwork, photography. We want artists to take inspiration from the words Community, Experience, Brand, and Authentic- but don't be too literal, make it your own!

If we use your submitted artwork in the 'zine you will receive a pass to the Miami Congress in October.

Not an Artist? Contribute your ideas!

Help us form In The Margins by taking a deeper look at the words we use. What IS hospitality, really?

Define one (or multiple) of the commonly over-used words we often hear in the Hospitality Industry. No, don't go to google to find a definition, tell us what these words mean to YOU!

EXPERIENCE - COMMUNITY - AUTHENTIC  -  BRAND

In The Margins

Elvina Beck, PodShare

Video

In 2012, Elvina asked why we must commit to one address, set roommate(s) and when we travel, pay two rents (our storage unit at "home' and where we physically sleep on the trip).
A membership-based housing network made a lot of sense - like a gym subscription where you share machines in a large open space. Elvina also grew up on MTV's Real World - seeing diverse casts and rotating cities. Transportation became increasingly cheaper and accessible for all...but Airbnb and hotels average $130 per night...

Elvina leased a live/work unit in Hollywood as her MVP, and after 3 years crowdfunded a DTLA location, inked a joint venture in Los Feliz, borrowed private money to open Venice, a bank loan for Westwood, and then managed the profits to open San Francisco and San Diego.

Elvina was born in the USSR in 1985, grew up in Brooklyn, graduated from Pepperdine, worked in front & behind the camera before building PodShare because she needed a place to live after the recession almost made her homeless.

The Rebranding

Anup Patel

Lenticular Wood Block, 22" x 39"

The Rebranding, inspired by Ava DuVernay's documentary "13TH," uses lenticular wooden planks to highlight how the Prison Industrial Complex is used as a tool to purposefully continue the institution of slavery under the guise of "law and order." As we continue to develop hospitality experiences, we bear a responsibility to the communities in which we invest - to take what we know to be true about this country's past, and do our part to help change course moving into the future.

Born in the U.K., and raised in the American South, Anup grew up like many other Indian Americans of his generation - in motels along with the interstate system. A lifelong artist in a family of creators, he now channels most of that energy into hotel development work, pushing for a globally inspired design that resonates with those often overlooked in the hotel space. Anup and his brother Jay are the proprietors of Wintergreen Hospitality, an NC-based hospitality, and hotel development company.

Temporary Terrains

Lauren Shapiro

Unfired Clay, Wire, Wood, Site-Specific

Immersed in the ecosystems of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami, Lauren Shapiro captured the impressions of endangered Florida plants by making non-toxic silicone molds. The culmination of her project resulted in a site-specific installation of the flora, artfully recreated in unfired clay. Due to the transitory nature of the material, the piece eventually dried and cracked over time while staying attached to a wooden and wire mesh framework at the entrance of the Garden. Through a series of public workshops, the local community was invited to participate in its construction by pressing clay into the flora molds and onto the framework. After the project’s conclusion, the pieces of the sculpture were broken down into dry dust and recycled with water for reuse.

The Dancing Queens

Gabrielle Riva

Watercolor, Ink, Digital Modifications

Gabrielle is a 28-year-old Canadian woman who has resorted to drawing and painting to cope with our current panic attack-inducing world. She is a mixed arts artist, and draws both by hand and digitally. She currently lives in France with her wife and spends most of her free time doodling. Her world is a colorful one but let not that trick you, the mind is darker than appears and full of faceless characters.
