The recipient of the 2018 Start Something Award has made a huge wave this year with newly opened hotels in both Hong Kong and our Nation’s Capital. What’s special about what she has started is it’s mission-focused mentality.
Kat Lo, Founder & President of Eaton Workshop, is building a hotel brand which incorporates co-working, lodging, and a platform for progressive thinkers to meet and collaborate. Each location benefits its community just as much as it benefits its guests through programming such as a radio platform to broadcast a radical indigenous-rights show and hiring truly local.
Throughout the early 2000s, she was an active organizer in the movements for global social and environmental justice. She was a Student Delegate for Greenpeace at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in The Hague and Bonn, led the Yale chapter of Green Corps, helped to launch the Yale Sustainability Initiative, was a visible anti-war spokesperson during the War on Iraq, organized the Autonomous Festival for Humanity and Against the Free Trade Area of the Americas, and was a key organizer of the WTO Protests in Hong Kong in 2005.
Katherine joined her family business in 2011 and is a hospitality industry professional . She joined the hotel division of Great Eagle Group in 2011 and acted as Executive Director of Langham Hospitality Group Limited. She has also acted as Non-executive Director of Langham Hospitality Investments Limited since 2013.
Under her creative and design direction, the iconic IBM building housing The Langham Chicago opened in 2013 and has consistently been voted No. 1 Hotel in Chicago by Travel + Leisure and No. 1 Travelers’ Choice Luxury Hotel in the United States by Tripadvisor.
In 2014, she was appointed President of Eaton. As President, she has a vision for the global rebranding of a new generation of Eaton. She leads the global Eaton team to execute the new Eaton vision in concept, design, programming, branding, development, project openings, marketing, public relations, and strategic partnerships. With Eaton, she aims to create a new brand in the hospitality space inspired by the power of content creation, holistic wellness, the progressive and entrepreneurial spirit, and social and environmental good.
